Once, I stopped to take in the height of the sunflowers, the girth of the greens, and the abundance of bright, fresh vegetables and a head poked out from among the plants. I gushed over the magnificence, not even caring that I was caught staring into someone’s backyard. “I love gardening,” she said. “Look at my beans.”

There’s so much to be said about a vibrant garden in the heart of a bustling city full of garages, vacant lots, and concrete. It’s more than just food. Or, beauty for many.

In Soil: The Story of a Black Mother’s Garden, Dungy gives a breathtaking narrative on what it means for many of the African Diaspora to dig into the Earth and what that means for the environment, community, and self.
